All Heart – By Dan Ward
𝐀𝐥𝐥 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭 By Dan Ward “You don’t get here by accident.” That’s what I told our two state qualifiers, Donovan Quinn and Olivia Pettigrew. In Michigan high school wrestling, nothing is handed to you. The path is simple, but not easy: the top four at districts move on. Top four at regionals punch their…
Heroes By Dan Ward
Heroes By Dan Ward “Oh, we can beat them for ever and ever Then we could be heroes Just for one day.” – David Bowie My wife bought me a cinch bag a few years ago when I started this go-round with the wrestling program. It’s nothing fancy —a small black bag with Coach…
No Excuses By Dan Ward
No Excuses By Dan Ward “Every day, it’s something, hits me all so cold You find me sittin’ by myself, no excuses, that I know”-Alice in Chains One of the greatest things about wrestling is this: records don’t matter. Rankings don’t matter. Once you step into the circle, none of it matters. It’s just…
Win or Go Home By Dan Ward
Win or Go Home By Dan Ward The wrestling regular season wrapped up Wednesday night with emphatic wins over Alpena and Shepherd. The Redwings finish the regular season at 14–5, with their only losses coming against ranked opponents: Mason, Fowlerville, St. Louis, Three Rivers, and Eaton Rapids. The boys’ season was packed with highlights.…

The Boys Are Back In Town – Week 5 Recap
The Boys Are Back In Town By Dan Ward Homecoming brought the glammer, the crowd, and the kind of Friday night football that makes a small town proud. The St. Johns Redwings welcomed the undefeated Mason Bulldogs for a hard-fought battle with all the intensity of a Thin Lizzy classic. The boys were back…
Train Kept A-Rollin’ – Week 4 Recap
Train Kept A-Rollin’ By Dan Ward There wasn’t anything fancy about the way the St. Johns Redwings went to work Friday night. They didn’t need it to be. While Williamston celebrated Homecoming, the Redwings brought a different kind of party to town—one built on pads popping, linemen moving bodies, and running backs finding daylight.…
Tougher Than the Rest – Week 3 Recap
Tougher Than the Rest By Dan Ward Eastern Stats(opens in new tab) SCOREBOARD(opens in new tab) Football has a funny way of settling arguments. You can talk about who is faster, who is stronger, and who is tougher, but eventually you have to strap on the pads and prove it. On Friday night, the…
